Leland, Suttons Bay capture volleyball districts

Suttons Bay had the toughest path to a Class C District crown on Saturday, but the Lady Norsemen cruised to a title with wins over Mancelona, Charlevoix and T.C. St. Francis. Suttons Bay advances to the regional at Charlevoix on Saturday against Inland Lakes. The regional also features Kingsley and Lake City.

Leland cruised to another Class D District title with wins over Northport and Central Lake. Leland is now 62-4 on the season and advances to the regional at Twining Arenac Eastern on Saturday.

Kingsley tops Suttons Bay in quad meet

Suttons Bay finished the quad meet 2-1 with wins over Benzie (25-12, 25-19) and McBain NMC (25-27, 25-22) before falling to Kingsley (28-26, 16-25, 19-25) to improve their record to 46-13-5.

Leland wins Cherryland Tourney to cap another title, Glen Lake goes 1-2 at Forest Area

To say Leland has owned the Cherryland in volleyball would be a huge understatement. Leland won another title on Saturday and in process won their 12th straight league title. Leland downed Northport, Leelanau School, T.C. Christian and Buckley to win the crown. T.C. Christian finished second.

Glen Lake went 2-2 on the day at the Forest Area Invitational. The Lakers lost to McBain NMC and Harbor Light, before bouncing back with wins over Manton and Forest Area. Jessica Odziana and Sam Rader led the way.

Teams no match for Leland

The Leland Comets dominated play and captured three wins at Suttons Bay. The Comets defeated Kingsley (25-21, 25-10), Kalkaska (25-17, 25-7) and Suttons Bay (25-8, 25-11). Leland was led by Alisha Glass and Jennifer Hecht.

Suttons Bay also did well scoring wins over Kalkaska (25-17, 25-16) and Kingsley (16-25, 25-20, 26-24). Holly Orban, Kelsey Wick and Christa Nesky led the way for the Lady Norse.

Lady Norsemen earn share of volleyball crown

Kingsley captured the regular season Northwest Conference, but it was Suttons Bay claiming the end of season tourney and share the crown for the second straight year. Suttons Bay bounced back from an early deficit to defeat Kingsley in the championship match 8-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19. Holly Orban led the way for Suttons Bay with 40 kills, 12 blocks, 29 digs and a perfect 38 of 38 serving.

Glen Lake played some good matches, but wound up taking 6th place after falling to Mesick 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 26-28, 15-12.

Leland volleyball player puts ordeal behind her

Leland tops Suttons Bay, Forest Area

Suttons Bay played Leland tough, but in the end the Comets continued their winning ways with a 25-7, 20-25, 25-18 victory over the host Norsemen. Leland and Suttons Bay both defeated Forest Area in the triangular meet.

Comets top Norsemen in SB Tourney final

The Leland Lady Comets continued their dominance of the Suttons Bay Invitational by defeating Suttons Bay 21-7, 21-12 in the tourney final. It is the fourth straight year the Comets have won. Leland’s Alisha Glass was tournament MVP with teammate Whitney Grant being named MVP of the morning session. Suttons Bay was led by Holly Orban’s 47 of 49 serving and 52 kills. Glen Lake split all of it’s matches in the 2nd place pool and Northport captured the 4th place pool.

Northport defeats Alanson in Ellsworth Tourney

Northport played tough all day, but finished 1-3 in the Ellsworth Tourney. The defeated Alanson and lost to Ellsworth, Bear Lake and Pickford. Leading the Wildcats was Cecilia Kohler.

Leland knocks off Class A & B teams to claim tourney

Leland defeated Lake Odessa-Lakewood, the #2 ranked team in Class B to claim the Grand Rapids Northview Invitational. The Comets improved to 39-4 overall. Alisha Glass led the way with 91 kills, 31 aces and six blocks.

Suttons Bay falls in battle for first

Kingsley got a big block and then went on a big run to defeat Suttons Bay 25-20, 25-15, 25-12. Kingsley’s Jill Walton got a block with the score tied 15 all in Game 1, which started a 60-32 run the rest of the match. Leading the Lady Norsemen were Holly Orban with 13 kills and Kelsey Wick with 6.

Suttons Bay wins to remain perfect in Northwest, Kingsley up next for Lady Norse

It’s finally here. Weather prevented Suttons Bay and Kingsley from playing earlier this month and now both will put their 3-0 conference records on the line in a battle for first place. Suttons Bay defeated Frankfort 25-15, 25-14, 25-19 to improve to 27-5-4 overall. Glen Lake remains in second place in the conference after a 19-25, 25-11, 25-5, 17-25 over Mesick. The Lakers are 8-10 overall and 3-1 in the Northwest.
