Leland wins own tourney

Leland didn’t lose a game all day to claim the Leland Invitational. The Comets defeated Pellston in the final 25-3, 25-20. Alisha Glass finished the tournament with 49 kills, 35 aces and 11 blocks, while Jennifer Hecht added 14 kils, 15 digs and 16 aces. Suttons Bay (3-2), Glen Lake (2-3) and Northport also competed.

Cherryland Conference Preview

Today is the Record Eagle’s preview of the Cherryland Conference. My pick is Northport, but Leland, St. Mary and Buckley are all capable. It should be interesting. Watch out for Leelanau Schools George Wilkinson. The sophomore has already scored 64 points in two games and has helped the Thunderbirds off to a 1-1 start.

Boys Hoops Tips-Off Tonight

Boys Basketball season starts tonight and 4 county teams are in action. Glen Lake travels to Leland, Northport hosts the T.C. Bulldogs and Lake Leelanau St. Mary visits T.C. St. Francis.

Suttons Bay and Leelanau School open their seasons tomorrow. The Norsemen host Lake Leelanau St. Mary and the Thunderbirds travel to Frankfort.

Comets lone county team to advance in girls hoops

In Class D last night at Lake Leelanau St Mary, Leland defeated Northport 46-21 while St. Mary lost a 59-53 heartbreaker to Traverse City Christian. Leland will face TC Christian Friday (Nov 18) at 7 PM. In Class C action at Suttons Bay, both Leelanau teams fell. Traverse City St. Francis topped Glen Lake 63-32 while Kingsley beat Suttons Bay 69-32. The final is Friday at 7 PM.

Suttons Bay captures district with 3-1 victory over Northport

Suttons Bay advanced behind two goals by junior Jesse Wright and one by Alex Dingrando to capture the Division 4 district title over Northport. Suttons Bay is looking for their first ever regional soccer win as they take on Cooks-Big Bay de Noc, Tuesday at 3:00 PM. The regional is at Suttons Bay. The other half features Big Rapids-Crossroads Academy vs. Harbor Light Christian at 3:00 PM on Wednesday. The regional final is slated for Friday, November 4 at 3:00 PM.

Norsemen, Wildcats advance to district final

Suttons Bay and Northport will play for a third time this season after both advanced in their Division IV soccer district semifinal matches. Both were very different games, with Northport cruising to a 4-0 win over Glen Lake, and Suttons Bay needing double overtime to get by Traverse City Christian 3-2. The Norsemen and Wildcats split their regular season meetings with each winning one goal games. The district final is Friday at 4 PM at the Keystone Fields in Traverse City.

Northport gets by Leland in soccer districts

Northport knocked off Leland 1-0 to advance i Division IV soccer districts. The Wildcats now play Glen Lake in one half of the district semis and Suttons Bay plays Traverse City Christian in the other. The district final is Friday at 4 PM at the TBAYS complex in Traverse City.

Suttons Bay & Leland Volleyball Advance, Northport Hoops Team Falls

In Girls Volleyball Quarterfinals last night, Suttons Bay managed to put away a tough Iron Mountain squad 25-15, 25-23, 25-23. The Lady Norsemen (now 42-9-6) will face Blissfield (45-6-4) at 3:45 pm in the Class C Semifinals on Thursday (Mar 10) at University Arena, Kalamazoo. In Class D, Leland (65-7) defeated Auburn Hills Oakland Christian, 25-22, 25-14, 25-17 and will meet Adrian Lenawee Christian (34-16-1) at 2 pm in Kalamazoo. Finals are on Saturday — here’s hoping both are still in the hunt! In the Class D Boys Basketball Regionals last night, Northport played tough but ultimately fell to Bellaire 72-56. Congratulations Wildcats!

The Cherryland Conference All Conference Boys’ Soccer selections were dominated by Leelanau County players. Conference champions Suttons Bay and second place finisher Northport each landed three players to the first team. Glen Lake and Leland each had one. For Suttons Bay, first team honors went to Mike Morrison, David Stowe and goalie Matt Klein. For Northport, Jimmy Stannard, Matt Voight and John Kiehl received nods. Cal Springsteen of Glen Lake and Isaac Griswold of Leland both were named.

Receiving second team mention were: Glen Lake, Jeff Clark; Leland, Dru Hemingway, Sam Simpson and Buddy Kenney; Northport, Joey Thomas and Gavin Bissell; Suttons Bay, Jabe Dalzell, Alan Holcombe, and Ben Darling.

Players receiving honorable mention were:
