Good Times in Detroit

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Sorry for the lack of posts, alot of the Detroit Sports Blogs I visit seem to have hit the same wall, namely postseason baseball! The Tigers have taken up lots of my spare time and along with the regular everyday busy life the blog has suffered. Nevertheless, here’s my thoughts on the current state of Detroit Sports!

Detroit Tigers - WOW! and WOW! Everyone in northern Michigan seems to be buzzing with World Series fever as the Tigers get set to face the Cardinals/Mets winner. I am pulling for the Cards because their offense doesn’t seem as scary. I know, I know, what about Pujols? He is scary, but I think top to bottom the Mets lineup is stronger. Plus I would love to see a Leyland vs. LaRussa World Series. I know, they don’t actually play, but seeing them match wits head to head would be alot of fun.

I will be travelling down to the Motor City this weekend, no tickets unfortunately, but will probably try to cruise down and check out the craziness that will be at Comerica Park. I can’t wait to see it!

Check out lots of Detroit Tigers Info at Absolute Michigan

Detroit Lions - Lost in World Series fever is the fact that our beloved Lions won their first game of the season. Coach Rod Marinelli was awarded the game ball and he deserves it. I know it doesn’t show up in the overall record, but I am seeing some good things out of our Detroit Lions. They have been competitive in every game but one, and could easily be .500 with a break here or there. I think Marinelli will get this turned around, despite Millen’s goofs and I expect a playoff team possibly next season, but for sure in Marinelli Season 3.

Detroit Pistons - I have seen lots of positive press about Jason Maxiell and I have to say I am excited about the upcoming Pistons season. They will miss Big Ben, but this team will score more and be much better offensively, which might be necessary as the “D” might be down from what Pistons fans have seen the last few seasons. Either way, the Pistons will contend for the Eastern crown.

Detroit Red Wings - I will admit, haven’t really given much attention to the Wings yet, but once the World Series is over, they will be back on my radar.

Detroit Shock - Their second WNBA Title came without much of a word from me, so for that I must apologize. Congrats! I keep wondering why no NBA team has made Bill Laimbeer an NBA coach!

Michigan Wolverines - #3 in the BCS and could be setting things up for a #1 vs. #2 matchup when they travel to Ohio State. That’s something I have been predicting all along and now it’s beginning to look like I may have finally been right about something.

Michigan State Spartans - After the Illinois loss, I have been down on my Spartans. Now 3-4 and clinging to a possible bowl bid, they are through the worst of the schedule. I don’t know if there’s enough left in the tank, but John L. will give it his best shot.

That’s a quick look into the mind, not much going on as you can tell, but I will try to post more frequently and will try to snag some photos from my Detroit trip.

Go Tigers!*

*From what I can tell this is the new way to say Good-bye in northern Michigan!

Take Five with the Leelanau Sports Guy

Opinions on five current Detroit & national sports topics from yours truly…

1. Tigers - Clinging to a one game lead in the Central and alot of Tiger fans are feeling very nervous. Don’t be. The Tigers have the easiest schedule of the three remaining contenders and will start it off with a sweep of the Orioles. How do I know this? Because they are going to score some runs tonight!

The Tigers, though, may have a good opportunity to break out against Baltimore’s Hayden Penn (0-2, 36.82).

The 21-year-old right-hander lasted only three innings and was pounded for seven runs and nine hits, including three homers, in a 9-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday. Penn actually reduced his ERA from 108.00.

2. Lions - I listened to the first game off and on Sunday and came away like everyone else, impressed with the defense, and puzzled by the offense. Of course sure enough on the final game-winning Seahawk drive our “D” goes soft and gives up a couple of big plays in a row to give up the easy field goal. I can’t really blame them though, they single-handedly kept the Lions in the game. I think Kitna is a “huge” improvement over Joey and he will be able to direct the Lions to some wins. Sorry Roy, just not this week.

3. Red Wings - The Wings are in TC, and the town is buzzing with excitement. I was thinking about trying to score some tickets, for the games next week. I did go to training camp a few years ago and really enjoyed it. You get to be real close to the action and interact with the players in a casual atmosphere. If you are a big Wings fan, I would definitely check it out one of these years, there are some tickets still available this year as well!

4. Wolverines Football - The biggest game of the weekend as the Wolverines travel down to Notre Dame. I might have to just breakdown and call up the biggest Wolverine fan I know (the father-in-law) and see if I can come watch the game on his new HD TV. I have this funny feeling Michigan is going to pull off the upset, behind the running of Michael Hart. Before the season started I thought Michigan might be able to contend for the title, and I still see a battle of unbeatens when they meet Ohio State at the end!

5. Spartans Football - Not really sure what to expect out of Sparty. MSU has looked very good one moment and very bad the next. That won’t cut it against a quality opponent. If MSU can pull this one out, then I look for Notre Dame to be 2-2 after next weekend!

If you want to let the me know what you think, you can always send me an email at leelanausportsguy@sportspig.com or post a comment!

It’s football preview time!

I am still working on my Spartan Football Preview and Big 10 conference predictions, I know the season starts tomorrow, but I will get it done! I still have to come up with another bet for The Sports Dude when my Spartans travel to Ann Arbor. It’s a busy time of year!

In the meantime, here are previews of the Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Lions from two of my favorite bloggers!

U of M, MSU Football Predictions

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

It’s too early for my predictions (which are usually wrong anyway), but some of the top preview magazines are out and have their preseason Big Ten and national title picks. Check out the article below for a quick summary from the Detroit News and check back in August for my picks!

According to the experts, Michigan will most likely finish 2nd in the Big Ten (to Ohio State) and Michigan State anywhere from 4th to 8th.

New Stations, same voices for Wolverine Football

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

I’m not a Michigan fan, but everyone else in my family is, and so I do on occasion listen to U of M football on the radio. It was a smart move bringing back Frank Beckmann and Jim Brandstatter. They make the game easy to listen to and have lots of fun doing it.

Watch out Wolverines, it’s a “trap” game

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

The Wolverines are on a roll and ranked for the first time since 1998. After two big wins over top 25 Michigan State and Wisconsin at home, they now travel to Penn State. This is one of those classic “trap” games that appear on your schedule after a tough game. A road trip against a struggling team can bring all the good feelings to a halt. I watched the Wolverines beat Wisconsin and I was mostly impressed, except down the stretch when they had a chance to put them away and didn’t. Michigan can’t play with that same attitude against an inferior opponent on the road or the Wolverines could find themselves upset.

Talking with Former Laker & Wolverine star Jason Wuerfel

I recently had a chance to send some questions to Leelanau County native Jason Wuerfel. He starred in athletics at Glen Lake and went on to play college baseball at the University of Michigan. He played minor league baseball for the Mid-Missouri Mavericks in 2004 and recently published his first book, Pray for Rain: A College Baseball Story. He is also heavily involved with Traverse City’s new minor league baseball team, the Traverse City Beach Bums. Here’s what he had to say…

——————————

Leelanau Sports Guy: What’s your role with the Traverse City Beach Bums?

Jason Wuerfel: I am the Vice President and currently run the Baseball Operation for the team until we hire a manager sometime in the next couple of months. Since my family and I are extremely hands on, my title only goes as far as what needs to be done that day. For instance, I’ve done my fair share of shoveling, landscaping, sweeping, and cleaning. We aren’t the type of people to sit back and complain if something doesn’t look good - we’ll fix it ourselves.

LSG: At what point did you realize your family’s dream was finally going to be reality?

JW: Not until we broke ground. I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, we’re really going to do this.” It seemed like we’ve been trying to make it a reality for so long that when it actually happened, it was very surreal. Even now when I drive up on the stadium I think to myself, “You’ve got to be kidding me, look how great this place looks.” It has been a dream of ours for such a long time and honestly, it has turned out even better than we pictured it. It gives me goose bumps just thinking about opening day when we crank up the music, the Beach Bums take the field, the crowd starts to cheer, and the mascots go crazy. It’s going to be awesome.

LSG: Any events during the inaugural season you can tell us about yet?

JW: It is tough to say for sure, because nothing can be put into concrete until the league generates the schedule. However, we have put the pressure on ourselves to make Wuerfel Park the best place to be every night from May to September. Our slogan says it all, “If you’re not here, you’re missing out!”

Look for giveaways on a nightly basis (from sunglasses, to t-shirts, hats and flip-flops, etc.) Also look for big promotions on a nightly basis - for instance many minor league teams run what’s called a “Diamond Dig,” where the team buries a diamond along the warning tracks and lets all the women in the crowd dig for it after the game. Also look for crazy games between every inning, and a never ending amount of prizes. We want everyone to go home with the feeling the got more than they paid for.

LSG: You played baseball at the University of Michigan. What was that like?

JW: “Best time of my life” sounds a little too cliche, but I’d have to say that I’m to have a tough time topping the experience. The intensity of practicing and playing on a Division I team is incredible, and it is very difficult to find anything like it after it’s done. The relationships you build are the same way - I spent a year playing in the Frontier League (same league as the Beach Bums), and it is a very different feeling in the locker room in professional baseball. You don’t have the “all for one” mentality like you do in college. I’m not sure if I can ever recreate the level of friendship I’ve had with the guys I met at Michigan.

LSG: What advice would you give to anyone who wants to play college sports?

JW: Go for it, never give up, and don’t let anyone tell you can’t. I don’t care who it was that I met going through college and the minors, everyone faces people who tell them what they can or can’t accomplish. The truth is, and always will be, you get what you put in. Don’t let what others tell you affect how hard you work. I’ve known too many people that have given up on themselves and stopped working hard because everyone around them told them they couldn’t make it. However, kids have to realize the odds, and just how many kids there are out there that they are competing with. In order to beat all those kids, you have to out work them, bottom line. And sitting on the couch playing Playstation isn’t going to cut it. As Kevin Garnett once said, “Being the best starts now.”

LSG: You were a star athlete at Glen Lake. What are some of your favorite high school sports moments?

JW: One of my best memories is from football. Playing Frankfort was always a good game, but my favorite was the game my junior year. It was the last game of the season, both of us were undefeated, and it was back when you went to playoffs based on the point system. And the way the region was shaking out, if we lost just one game we wouldn’t have enough points to qualify for the playoffs. I missed an extra point early in the game and we failed to convert a 2-point conversion on our next touchdown. So with about 8 seconds left I had a 40 yard field goal into a freezing late October wind with our team down 13-12. Frankfort took two time outs to “ice” me, but I was glad to have the extra time to think. When we finally got the play off, my holder ended up with the ball laces-in (the direct opposite of what you want) and I remember panicking for a split second until I hit the ball. When I looked up I saw it was straight and I instantly starting going crazy, never even considering distance. However, the game film showed that I only cleared the bar by about five yards.

My other favorite memories was playing in the regional finals my senior year in baseball. I hit 2nd in the line-up behind Brian Maurer, and we were both first team all-state that year. With two outs, a runner on second, and our team up by a run in the fifth inning over Central Lake, they decided to intentionally walk Maurer to face me (Something I had never experienced). The pitcher hung me a first pitch curveball and I hit it onto what is now the soccer field at Glen Lake. Rounding the bases never felt so satisfying.

LSG: What is it about the game of baseball that attracted you to it?

JW: This question could be the subject of a 2nd book for me, but I’ll keep it brief. Baseball is a game of perseverance where anyone who can’t handle the adversity is quickly weeded out. If you can’t believe in yourself through mistakes, this game will drive you crazy. It can make the best teams and the worst teams equal on any given day. It is a game that tests your attention, where one brief lapse can cause your team the game. It is a game of skill; there will always be a spot on the infield where a good bunt will get you a hit no matter who is pitching or who is playing third base.

It’s magically, really, whether you are playing it or sitting in the stands. It is so complicated and so involved that everyone can go through their life not knowing anything about it are think they are an expert because there is no one to tell them otherwise. Jake Fox, one of my friends from Michigan who was drafted in the third round by the Cubs told me recently, “All of these college and professional coaches who have studied hitters for years and know all this stuff about the swing and I have finally come to realization that they don’t know anything. In the end you still grab the bat and hit the ball.”

LSG: Tell us about your book, how did that come about?

JW: I mentioned early about my experience at Michigan. Well, when I was finished with baseball I was met with a bit a depression. It was such a great time in my life, and it was difficult to let go; so I started writing.

The writing was therapy for me. I started creating characters that reminded me, if only slightly, of the friends I made at Michigan. Every time I sat down to write about these characters I felt them come alive, develop personalities, and more than anything, remind me what it was like to be living the dream, playing college baseball. So I sat down and wrote as much as I could, it was a feeling that I had to get off my chest.

It is a baseball book, about athletes going through many different experience in college, but the premise is this: we all have difficult times in our lives and to use a baseball analogy, sometimes we just need a rain out. Thus the name of the book, “Pray for Rain.”

LSG: One final question, how would you fix the Detroit Tigers?

JW: It’s great that the Tigers, namely the owner, Ilitch, is showing a little more interest in winning by signing some big name guys in the off-season. This is a great first step, but the problems with the Tigers run much deeper than who is hitting clean-up in the big leagues. Look at organizations like the Atlanta Braves, who recently clinched their 14th division title in a row. Every year they get help from unlikely heros and where do those unlikely heros come from? Their farm system. I challenge anyone to name more than a couple guys on the Tigers roster than started in and came out of the Tigers farm system. Yes, big names are going to make your team, but the farm system is the glue that holds it together.

Labor Day Weekend Thoughts

Tuesday, September 6th, 2005

I love the 3 day weekend, doesn’t get much better than that. We did all the usual stuff, swimming, sitting at the beach, cookouts, smores, and I even found time to have another live fantasy football draft. As a bonus, a gentleman was fishing in his kayak out on Lake Michigan and caught a beautiful salmon. His wife doesn’t like it so he gave it to us. I grilled it last night and it was delicious, a great way to end the weekend!

Here’s my thoughts from the football games I got to watch.

MSU 49 - Kent State 14 - Was about what I expected. Lots of offense and some holes in the defense. Stanton was solid, but the best player on the field was sophomore Jehuu Caulcrick. He finished with 114 yards and 3 TDS to lead the MSU ground game. Freshman Javon Ringer also ran for 69 yards and showed some flashes of his potential. If the defense can tighten up a bit this team can definitely go to a bowl and make some noise in the tough Big Ten.

Michigan 33 - Northern Illinois 17 - I am sure Michigan fans were a little nervous at first, but Michael Hart and the Michigan offense was too much. Henne looked good and the receivers made some great catches. Michigan’s defense is going to be the key to their season though. They gave up a couple of big plays and long drives that could prove deadly against the top teams in the Big Ten.

Lions 21 - Bills 7 - The Lions needed this win badly heading into the regular season. The defense looked sharp and the ground game was working well. Losing Garcia does hurt, but they will overcome this. Harrington is the man and look for him to lead the way early this season. A fast start is critical to this Lions team.

Why we love college sports…

Friday, November 19th, 2004

There are many reasons to love college sports, and one of them is the spirit and passion of the fans. Michigan and Ohio State fans are part of one of the biggest, greatest rivalries in all of sports, and some of the fans come up with some crazy stuff. You might not like the article below if you are a Michigan fan, but regardless, it’s kind of funny and very entertaining.

OSU punks rip into U-M rivals

Buckeye band the Dead Schembechlers makes fun of coaching legend, his team

Free Press article by The Undercover Fan

The University of Michigan plays the Ohio State University on Saturday for the 101st time in what many consider to be the country’s best college football rivalry. But it’s not much of a rivalry.

Michigan has never won. That’s right, they’ve lost 100 straight games.

And for all those who believe that U-M won just last year, 35-21 in Ann Arbor, well, said the frontman for Columbus punk rock band the Dead Schembechlers: “They are dupes, suckers who’ve been tricked by the ‘Wolverine liberal media.’”

In fact, the man who calls himself Bo Biafra believes many of the nation’s problems can be traced to the prissy campus in Ann Arbor.

“Did you know that the massive changes in our country’s weather patterns can be traced back to the time when Apollo 15 was in the air?” Biafra said. “Did you know who made up the crew? That’s right, three alumni from the University of Michigan!”

Now or never? QB hopes being on hot seat might light a fire by Curt Sylvester

Harrington has shown flashes, but at this point, I think the Lions need more than that. If you compare him to David Carr (both taken 3 years ago), if he struggles there is no talk of replacing him because he has earned it. Harrington’s inconsistency’s haven’t helped him. I don’t think McMahon is necessarily the answer, maybe a veteran or go through the draft. I would look no further than San Diego, how good is Drew Brees looking right now?

Weekend Wrapup

Monday, November 15th, 2004

Lions: Why do I even bother watching? Every week I have gotten more frustrated watching this team. Harrington trying to throw, the defense giving up big plays, Hanson missing field goals… It all adds up to another loss. Bright spots were Eddie Drummond and the punt return unit, and Kevin Jones looks like he is getting stronger and more comfortable with the offense. Now if we can just get Harrington on track it would be nice, otherwise I say give McMahon another shot.

Pistons: 3-3 after the West Coast Road Trip. They obviously miss Big Ben and I think coach Larry Brown as well. Running into a determined Okur didn’t help either. I still think they will be all right, I like what McDyess is doing when he gets minutes. They will still win the Eastern Conference.

Red Wings: Who?

Tigers: Ananheim closer Troy Percival is going to visit Detroit. He would be an immeditate upgrade over Urbina, but would allow Urbina to be the setup man. I don’t know if the Tigers have a realistic chance at Percival or not, but he has been one of the most consistent closers over the past few seasons.

Wolverines Football: Took care of business against the Wildcats and now prepare for the trip to Columbus. With MSU’s throttling of Wisconsin, Michigan now has a clear path to the Rose Bowl.

Spartans Football: WOW! That offense keeps right on rolling. MSU took it right to Wisconsin and ruined their perfect season while keeping their bowl hopes alive. Wins over Penn State and Hawaii would clinch a bowl berth.

Great Game then Bad Game

Monday, November 1st, 2004

Michigan defeats Michigan State 45-37 - 3 OT
WOW! What a game. I love Michigan State so I was disappointed in the outcome, but it was one of the best games I have ever seen. Lots of big plays for both teams. If I had a vote Braylon Edwards would be my Heisman Trophy winner. Amazing. Read about the game.

Cowboys defeat Lions 31-21
The Lions were good, and then they were bad. Whenever they made a good play, they would either get a penalty or give up a big play. Specials teams were very inconsistent allowing big returns all day. With the Vikings losing the Lions could have moved into a first place tie. Read about the game.
