Another call for Goodell to do something, anything to help Lions

author Posted by: Leelanau Sports Guy on date Dec 23rd, 2008 | filed Filed under: Detroit Lions

Yahoo! Sports Dan Wetzel has a plan to help the Detroit Lions. It involves the commissioner and it goes like this…

It’s time for the league’s image protecting commissioner, Roger Goodell, to get as tough with an increasingly incompetent owner as he would with a misbehaving player. If the hard line approach is about protecting the NFL, then what’s worse for the league right now than the chaos and carnage of the winless, hopeless, helpless Detroit Lions?

That would be great, as would either of these scenarios…

The best case would be to get Ford Sr. to transfer power to his son, William Clay Ford Jr., who at least had the wherewithal to push for the firing of Millen earlier this season.

If that’s not possible, then do what NBA commissioner David Stern did with the New York Knicks. He took self-destructive owner James Dolan (like Ford Sr. little more than a bumbling trust fund) and all but forced him to hire respected basketball executive Donnie Walsh. Half a season later the franchise has been stabilized.

It doesn’t really sound that hard does it? Please get to work on this Commissioner Goodell!

Nuggets, Denver love Billups

I was shocked by the trade at first, but ultimately it was a great move by the Pistons. It’s also working out very well for the Nuggets and the city of Denver. Chauncey Billups has returned and has lead the Nuggets to their best start ever. I saw this great article on Yahoo! Sports about Billups return to Denver and what it means to the players, fans and the entire city.

Wolverines surprising start has people talking NCAA Tourney

Most everyone knows I am a Michigan State Spartan fan, but that hasn’t stopped me from being impressed with the Michigan Wolverines hoops team in coach John Beilein’s second season. The Wolverines are off to a 6-2 start with wins over UCLA and Duke being the highlights. Superstar Manny Harris hasn’t disappointed and if DeShawn Sims can play like he did against Duke against everyone else, the Wolverines will be in the upper half of the Big Ten.

Tigers trade for Rangers catcher Laird

author Posted by: Leelanau Sports Guy on date Dec 8th, 2008 | filed Filed under: Detroit Tigers

The Detroit Tigers have acquired the starting catcher they desperately needed trading two prospects for Texas Rangers catcher Gerald Laird. Laird is a strong defensive catcher with a good arm behind the plate. He’s a veteran of six major league seasons.

With a strong arm and a well regarded reputation for his defensive skills, Laird fits the profile of what the Tigers hoped to gain. He threw out 21 out of 74 would-be basestealers while recording a .986 fielding percentage and allowing six passed balls in 2008. He batted .276 over 344 at-bats this past season with 24 doubles, six home runs and 41 RBIs, including a .299 batting average away from the hot, humid weather in Texas.

The Tigers gave up two right-handed minor league pitchers 25-year-old Guillermo Moscoso and 18-year-old Carlos Melo.

My View: A good trade that supplies one of the Tigers biggest needs this off-season. Now we’ll see what kind of shortstop Dave Dombrowski can find.
