Larionov Benefit Charity Signing

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Want to meet a former Red Wing and help support a good cause? You can on Saturday, August 19th at the Best Buy in Traverse City. Former Red Wing Larionov will be signing copies of his DVD “Farewell from Moscow - The Igor Larionov Farewell Game” from 11:30am to 1 pm. A portion of the proceeds from DVD sales will benefit the Igor Larionov Youth Hockey Charitable Foundation.

Here’s an excerpt from the press release…

The award-winning “Farewell From Moscow: The Igor Larionov Farewell Game” is a must-have for the sports-lover’s collection. Chrome Bumper Film’s A-list director John “QUIG” Quigley, was named “Best Director ~ Documentary” at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival (NYIIFVF) for his work on the documentary/DVD which chronicles all the excitement, energy and passion of Larionov’s final game in its entirety while also giving fans a rare behind-the-scenes look at Larionov with candid interviews from him and former teammates and coaches. The documentary also chronicles the players’ entire weekend in Moscow as part of the cutting-edge DVD and is also loaded with many extras, including game highlights spanning Larionov’s career, and more than 150 photos.

The fast-paced signature style of QUIG, known for his creation of music videos and other work for leading music artists, including Eminem brings a vibrant, youthful energy never before seen in a documentary. Under Quigley’s direction, Chrome Bumper Films has remarkably weaved countless hours of footage – both on and off the ice – into a captivating masterpiece befitting a legend. Working closely with Larionov, Quigley threaded a refined, articulate and intelligent portrait of the man who captivated fans worldwide with his talent for nearly a third of a century.

An inspiration on-and-off the ice, Larionov continues to give back to the community and to the hockey world through The Igor Larionov Youth Hockey Charitable Foundation. Founded by Igor Larionov in 2004, The Igor Larionov Youth Hockey Charitable Foundation is concerned with improving the condition of youth hockey leagues throughout Russia. Since its original U.S. release – to a sold-out audience on January 13, 2006 in Detroit and its Canadian release on June 10, 2006 at the Hockey Hall of Fame, additional funds for the foundation have been raised through the sale of the “Farewell From Moscow: The Igor Larionov” DVD.

“Farewell From Moscow: The Igor Larionov Farewell Game” is currently available for purchase at Best Buy. The DVD signing at the Traverse City Best Buy is located at 2577 N US Highway 31 S. A portion of the proceeds from all DVD sales will be donated to The Igor Larionov Youth Hockey Charitable Foundation.

Stay away from internet/radio/tv for one weekend and look what happens!

Monday, August 14th, 2006

This past weekend was tied spent with family functions (church, brunch) and parties (class reunion) and kids (lots of playing, cleaning, diapers) so it wasn’t until Sunday night that I was able to figure out what the Lions, Tigers, Beach Bums, etc. had done. Needless to say I have lots of different feelings…

Nervousness
The White Sox swept the Tigers, made it look rather easy and now only trail by 5 1/2 games in the Central. The Tigers will get their chance at home vs. Chicago again next week, but they need to take at least 2 out of 3 in Boston to stop alot of naysayers from gaining momentum. I think they can and will do it. A strong start from Nate Robertson tonight will be the key to the series.

Excitement
Lions preseason football always brings out the worst in me. I start talking about how good they did this or that and then start getting excited for the regular season. I do like Marinelli and Martz and think they can turn the franchise around. I just don’t know if it will be this year or next. The schedule looks pretty tough to me. I think they will score some points, just not sure if they will stop anyone else from doing the same.

Sadness
As one of the readers of KA.com, I know I will miss the Detroit sports posts and all the non-sports stuff as well. Good luck Kevin in your Mile High endeavor! Here’s hoping you find some time for the occasional post…

Joy
The Beach Bums have turned it back around and have won 7 of their last 10 and moved into a virtual tie with Chilicothe for the East Division lead. I am happy because I have tickets to some upcoming games (Thanks Aunt Sue!) and hope to see some meaningful playoff-style baseball.

Happiness

I can now rest easy…

Apparently William Clay Ford likes the direction his Lions are going. Of course it’s easy when you can’t get any worse.

Stanton to rely more on teammates

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

I am very excited for college football to start. I am even more excited about senior quarterback Drew Stanton and what he can do in the high-octane Michigan State offense.

Now he’s going to try to not do too much and instead rely on teammates more to make big plays in crucial situations. I sure hope that’s the case and if it is watch out Big Ten!

Shimek still getting more time

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Chicago Sky rookie Liz Shimek has been getting more minutes as of late and producing. The Sky fell to the Phoenix Mercury 90-70, but Shimek played 16 mintues grabbed 4 rebounds, scored 3 points, dished out 4 assists and blocked 2 shots. Not a bad night. The Sky currently own the league’s worst record with only 4 wins and 24 losses, but that should give Shimek plenty of opportunities to show what she can do.

A look at King’s Challenge

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

I don’t cover golf too often in the blog, but I stumbled upon this article reviewing Arnold Palmer’s King’s Challenge Golf Course. I don’t play golf much anymore, but when I used to I did enjoy this course. My scores weren’t great, but hey, it was fun! The #8 par 5 hole is amazing and MichiganGolf.com writer Brandon Tucker talks about that and more in the article below.
