Take Five with the Leelanau Sports Guy

Opinions on five current Detroit & national sports topics from yours truly…

1. Tigers Spring Training - Am I pathetic? Every year I get excited during spring training. Maybe it’s the feeling of spring just around the corner, maybe the higher temperatures are making me crazy. Either way, I am very geeked for the 2006 season. I love the Todd Jones and Kenny Rogers signings. Maggs is healthy. Carlos Guillen is healthy. Jim Leyland is managing. We stole Polanco. Shelton is ready. Are they going to win the Central and make the playoffs? Probably not, but I think they will be better and contending for that Wild Card spot until the end, that’s all I can ask for.

2. Pistons Backup PG - I think Hunter and Acker can do the job for now, but the name Tony Delk is being whispered about too. I think Delk would be a great pickup if he is waived and would provide the Pistons with some great depth winding down the regular season.

3. Jeff Backus - In my honest opinion, he’s been a bust. But considering what options are out there, the Lions had no choice. I hope he finally steps it up.

4. Darko - It’s obvious he doesn’t get it and probably never will. In the end the Pistons will look good for sending him to Orlando and getting a #1 pick in return.

5. March Madness - Is almost here, yeah! Not really sure what Michigan State or Michigan is going to do. I think MSU could still make a tournament run, but without Trannon’s leadership, defense and rebounding, someone is going to have to step up - HUGE! As for Michigan they are still like Jekyll and Hyde, you just don’t know which is going to show up. I hope they make the tourney, they should get in with just one more win.

Tigers - yes, I am geeked as well and I share your fear of being that way. I do not see them as winning the central, but at this point I am just asking for .500.

Pistons PG - if all else fails then Hunter and Acker should be enough. Besides, come playoff time, do you see Billups off the floor that much anyway. He can use Prince and Rip and Delfino in there, Hunter is good enough, if nothing happens I still am okay.

Backus - yes he has been a disappointment, but like you said, what was out there? There are no intriguing free agents at that spot and a rookie would be worse.

Darko - I like the fact they got a #1 for him and the fact it is two years from now doesn’t bother me. I mean, what rookie with size would bump Ben or Rasheed out of the way within the next few years anyhow? We will need a “big” in about four years when Sheed and Ben are about 35 and on their way out.

March Madness - not a big fan of it anymore like I used to be, just not enough time. I would love to see U of M get in, but that word bubble is there slapping us in the face.

  2. Ben Taylor Said,

How can the Pistons “look good” for trading Darko? They passed on Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade for a guy who is worthless. It’s actually one of the few *bad* moves Dumars has made there…

PS Don’t get your hopes up for the Tigers, they don’t have the pitching

  3. Leelanau Sports Guy Said,

I think the Pistons can “look good” from this deal if Darko keeps heading down the path his attitude is taking him. If Dumars holds on to him longer, he might not get a #1 back in return. If the pick ends up in the lottery the Pistons will get a solic pick in the deal and be no worse for the wear for drafting him.

Anthony wasn’t a fit for the Pistons at the time, plus he doesn’t play ‘D’.

I liked Bosh and thought he would have made a solid pick.

Wade has surprised just about everyone. He’s definitely taken his game to another level.

All three of those guys have something in common, they, like Darko, would have sat on the bench in Detroit as well. None would be where they are today and the Pistons would have been forced to trade one of them just like Darko.
