The Sports Dude has pointed me to an interesting interview with Tom Kowalski by Stoney on Sports Radio 1130. Kowalski seems to say that Marinelli isn’t naming Harrington the starter but that Millen is… It’s a good read. Thanks Sports Dude!

Original Post
Lions head coach Rod Marinelli and GM Matt Millen have announced that quarterback Joey Harrington will be back and that he is the frontrunner for the starting quarterback position. New offensive coordinator Mike Martz has made some positive comments and apparently likes what he has seen from Harrington on film and from his quick talk to him yesterday.

Harrington sounds upbeat and ready to go. I sure hope he is because it will be his last chance in Detroit. All along I have always thought he was going to be a good quarterback in the NFL and at one point last year I just assumed that it would be for some other team. Now it looks like that team could be the Lions.

With the talented wide receivers and Kevin Jones in the backfield, I look for the Lions to dramatically improve next season.

The thing I like is that Martz looks at his quarterbacks and designs an offense that plays to their strengths. So look for Joey to hook up with Roy Williams and Charles Rogers alot down field. Look for Kevin Jones to touch the ball alot more (something Mooch could never figure out).

I believe Harrington and ultimately the Lions will succeed under Marinelli and Martz and be a playoff team THIS SEASON. Yeah, that’s right! Go Lions!

  1. A Big Goofy White Guy, aka Big Al Said,

I swear I heard screams all over the metro Detroit area this morning. All it took was opening the sports page of the morning Freep and seeing “Joey still #1.”

  2. the sports dude Said,

I do not know how much of it is true, but Tom “The Killer” Kowalski was on WDFN yesterday afternoon and he was saying that, yet again, this was more Millen saying “You will give Joey a chance” to Martz and Marinelli then it was the two coaches wanting to give him the chance. If that is the case than that is BS, let the coaches coach and the GM stroke his mustache.

  3. Leelanau Sports Guy Said,

I wouldn’t doubt there was screaming Big Al, and there will be even more if what the Sports Dude is saying is true. I agree, let the coaches do their jobs!

P.S.: Sports Dude, your “hot chick” post yesterday was great!

  4. the sports dude Said,

Thank you for the fine compliments on the hot chick post, I thought it was an interesting situation and worth posting about.

I read the transcripts for the WDFN interview over at MLIVE “Highlight Reel” and it seems like, if Killer is speaking the truth, that it is just that.

It should be an interesting thing next season if Joey clearly doesn’t get it, what will happen then?

  5. Leelanau Sports Guy Said,

I just checked them out too. You’re right. Although I love the Drew Brees possibility!
