Are full-time officials that crazy of an idea?

author Posted by: Leelanau Sports Guy on date Jan 17th, 2006 | filed Filed under: Detroit Lions

I have never been able to figure out why NFL officials work part-time and most have other jobs they do when not officiating. The NFL has money, lots of it, why can’t they give officials a hefty salary and work year round? The players make lots of money, so they should be able to ante up for the officials too. A good article on the subject below.

I just don’t know if it could actually happen and make sense. I mean, how many officials are there a game… 8, 10, 12? I really am not sure. Plus, there are what, 12 games a weekend. I mean, you would have to pay these guys at least $30,000 grand a year just to get by… I mean, the NFL may be rich but that is a lot of money. I mean, I would love for the players to pay up some to, you know put some of their money in a pool for ref fees like rec league stuff around here, but I don’t see those guys giving up any of their money, even if it would benefit them.

However, I have not read the article, so I will do that now… maybe after reading it the cat will change my mind.

There are 7 man crews, 32 teams, so a maximum of 16 games per week. 112 officials is the minimum. So if you are paying them $100,000 each, you are looking at 11.2 million a year. Each team would have to chip in $350,000 per year. That’s doable! If my math is correct that is.
