Top Players to Compete in ESPN 1310 Radio Snowbound Open Tennis Tournament
Acme, Mich., January 6, 2006 - Some of the top ranked men tennis players in the Midwest, Canada, and the world will compete in the 2006 ESPN 1310 Radio Snowbound Open Tennis Tournament, January 20-22, at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, near Traverse City, Mich.
This is the 20th year for the Snowbound Open, one of Northern Michigan’s premier tennis tournaments. Sixteen singles players and 16 doubles teams will compete for the $10,050 prize purse, and for the first time $1,000 in junior tennis scholarships will be awarded in conjunction with the tournament.
2005 Champion Michael Ciszek of Montreal, Quebec will return to defend his title. He is currently ranked #9 in Canada. Among other top competitors will be three-time Snowbound Open champion Adam Baranowski of Ontario, Canada. Adam is currently ranked #13 in Canada. Dan Goldberg, former number one singles and three-time NCAA All-America at the University of Michigan ranked as high as 270 in the world.
Other notable competitors include Will Farah, ranked as high as 710 in the world and Traverse City’s Andy Caldwell, Head Tennis Professional at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Caldwell is a former number one singles player in Division I at New Mexico State and a former ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) satellite tour player.
The singles round of 16 will take place on Friday at noon followed by a Player/Sponsor Doubles mixer. Play will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and continue into the evening on Saturday. Semi-final matches will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday followed by the doubles final and concluding with the singles final Sunday at 1:00 p.m. There is no admission charge for spectators. Courtside seating will be available.
