The highest-scoring NBA game of All-Time

author Posted by: Leelanau Sports Guy on date Dec 14th, 2005 | filed Filed under: Detroit Pistons

Farlane at Absolute Michigan pointed me towards this article that remembers the 1983 battle triple overtime battle with the Detroit Pistons defeating the Denver Nuggets 186-184 in triple overtime.

Wow, those were some high-scoring games in the early 80’s. It’s quite a contrast to today’s NBA, where players are bigger, faster and actually play some defense. Isiah Thomas and Kelly Tripucka were the leaders of that Pistons team, and along with Bill Laimbeer, John Long and Vinnie Johnson, could score with the best of them.

Cherryland Conference Preview

Today is the Record Eagle’s preview of the Cherryland Conference. My pick is Northport, but Leland, St. Mary and Buckley are all capable. It should be interesting. Watch out for Leelanau Schools George Wilkinson. The sophomore has already scored 64 points in two games and has helped the Thunderbirds off to a 1-1 start.

Suttons Bay ran into a hot shooting T.C. St. Francis Gladiators team and lost 70-33 in a non-conference game. The Glads finished shooting 50% on the night and limited Suttons Bay to 28 percent. Ray Freund’s 13 points led the Norsemen.

My Current Views on Things and Stuff

Catchy title, huh?

I have been so busy lately, I haven’t had a chance to really pay attention to anything in the sports world, but here’s some of my recent thoughts.

The Heisman - I thought Vince Young should have won it, but I wasn’t surprised it went to Bush. He is a game changer and very explosive. He will be lights out in the NFL.

The Lions - They can’t get any worse, at least I hope they can’t. They should start DanO, and see what he can do, obviously the Garcia experiment is a train wreck.

The Pistons - Best record in the NBA, and playing great basketball. If they lock up home court this year, they will definitely be bringing the title back to Motown.

That’s all I have time for, but I do like the Tigers signings, and think both players will really help in the clubhouse and on the mound. They will provide experience to the young arms. Spring training can’t get here fast enough!

Elliott Gallagher (Linebacker) and Chris Send (Line) were named to the Record Eagle All-Region Dream Team after dominating senior seasons for the Suttons Bay Norsemen.

Here’s what they said about each player…

Gallagher - “Elliott was the Defensive MVP in the Northwest Conference. He had 83 tackles in less than eight games. He also rushed for 375 yards and 8 TDs.”

Send - “Chris put together another strong year for the Norsemen. He registered 88 tackles, 13 behind line of scrimmage. He had five sacks.”

Lions are a mess

author Posted by: Leelanau Sports Guy on date Dec 5th, 2005 | filed Filed under: Leland Comets

The wife went shopping, the kids were sleeping, so unfortunately I had time to watch some of the Lions game. Why I waste my Sunday afternoons is beyond me. This team is a complete joke right now. Fans were running around with Fire Millen signs and who can blame them. Jeff Garcia was throwing around wobbly passes and might have the weakest arm of any NFL quarterback I have ever seen. One of the bright spots that I could see was Pinner and of course the defensive front four. Other than that, there isn’t a whole lot of good from what I can tell.

Charles Rogers can’t figure out how to practice. Kevin Jones can’t stay healthy. Marcus Pollard drops passes. Dré Bly gets burned. The list goes on and on.

It does get frustrating every week to watch this mess. Fans are sick of it, you would think the Fords would be too.

USALuge.com: Muskegon’s Mark Grimmette Returns to Winter Olympics For Third Consecutive Year

Training for last season’s worlds.

A press release I received this morning…

In February 2006, USA Luge’s doubles team of Mark Grimmette (Muskegon, Mich.) and Brian Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.) will look to do something that no other U.S. winter Olympic male athlete has done before - win three consecutive medals in three consecutive Olympic Winter Games. Figure skater, Beatrix Loughran, and speedskater, Bonnie Blair, are the only U.S. athletes to accomplish the feat.

Loughran captured two silver and one bronze medal while competing in the 1924, 1928 and 1932 Winter Games, while Blair captured her back-to-back-to back Olympic medals while she skated to gold medal finishes in the women’s 500-meter event in the 1988, 1992 and 1994 Games. Blair also raced to Olympic victories in both the 1992 and 1994 women’s 1,000-meter event, and a bronze medal result in the 1988 women’s 1,000-meter race.

In Torino, Italy, Grimmette and Martin could also become the first American Winter Olympians to race to bronze; silver and gold medal finishes in consecutive Winter Games. In 1998, in Nagano, Japan, Grimmette and Martin captured USA Luge’s first Olympic medal when they raced to a bronze medal result. Four years later, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the pair moved up one spot on the medal podium with a silver medal finish. Grimmette also competed in the 1994 Winter Games with Jonathan Edwards, where he raced to a fourth place finish.

“When I first began sliding, I never could have imagined that I would be in this position,” said the 33-year-old Grimmette. “My Olympic history shows fourth, third and second place Olympic finishes, so I don’t think that there’s any secret about what I’m going for next.”

First teamed together in Dec. 1996, Grimmette and Martin have not only excelled on the Olympic stage, but in each season leading up. In addition to their two Olympic medals, the pair has become USA Luge’s all-time leaders in international medals won, with 59. The duo has captured three overall World Cup crowns, 10 World Cup race victories, four world championship bronze medals, two overall Challenge Cup titles and the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games’ gold medal.

“Winning that first Olympic medal was the most exciting thing that ever happened to me, followed very, very closely by winning silver,” added the 31-year-old Martin. “I’m very proud of what Mark and I have been able to accomplish, however, there are two things still missing - a world championship gold medal and Olympic gold. I want to have both before I’m through.”

You can follow Grimmette and Martin’s Olympic quest as well as their success throughout the entire 2005-06 World Cup season by visiting their web site, www.grimmettemartin.com.
