My Two Cents on the Lions

Everyone’s talking about it. “What to do next?” “Where do we go from here?” All I know is it’s not the playoffs, that’s for sure. The remaining schedule is brutal and the Lions offense is, well offensive. Our top draft pick receivers aren’t contributing. The offensive line isn’t protecting. The quarterbacks don’t have time to look downfield, and when they are they aren’t finding open receivers. This mess is more than one player here or there is going to fix. The whole organization needs an attitude adjustment. This ship is sinking and very fast. They should beat Arizona on Sunday, but that might be it for a while. Games with Dallas, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Cincy make up the bulk of the remaining schedule and I can honestly say I don’t think the Lions will win any of those. They have to go to Green Bay and have a home visit with Minnesota. So that leaves this Sunday and their game at New Orleans as the two most winnable games. My best guess is they will finish with another 5-11 season. If that happens, here’s what the Lions need to do.

1. Fire Mooch. I like him, but he obviously isn’t going to cut it here. His offense is boring and doesn’t fit the personnel anyway.

2. Try to Hire Charlie Weis. I know Notre Dame just gave him a huge extension, but that’s not going to stop him from going to the NFL at some point. Sure he probably won’t leave after one season, but talk to him anyway and make him an offer that would be very hard to refuse.

3. Draft Leinart. Again whatever it takes to trade up and get him, although we will probably have a great shot at the top pick anyway. He is a winner and a future leader the likes of what the Lions need.

4. Draft offensive lineman. Lots of ‘em! Kevin Jones needs holes and Leinart is going to need time.

5. Cut Charles Rogers lose. As much as I hate to say it, it’s time. He is a bust and will never contribute in a Lions uniform. Unless he makes a huge improvement in his attitude I see no reason to keep him around.

That’s my two cents.

I agree with you on most of your points, this is a sad bunch that has no clue what so ever. I think it is time that Mooch goes, I agree with you I like him, but it may be his “likeability” that is his downfall, just ask Alan Trammell.

Weis would be interesting, but I agree that it may take too much to pry him from ND. The name I keep hearing floated around is Mike Martz. Just another thought.

Please do not draft Leinart! This is the only point I disagree on, I am sorry, but I just don’t see Leinart making it anywhere but on the bench in the NFL. Sorry, I just don’t see him being any different than Joey.

Yes, the offensive line needs help and since you rip a Spartan I can rip a Wolverine to. For a contract year Backus certainly picked a bad time to decide to suck! I will give him this though, at least he is playing with a tough injury and sucking it up! Much more than we can say for the “paper” receivers we have.

Yes, it is time for Charles to go. He has this week, this Sunday, and if he pisses practice away again and pisses the game away again then cut him, give him the T.O. treatment and let him loose.

    Later.

I agree Leinart is a risk, I just think he has something special and is going to make a good NFL quarterback. Just a hunch more than anything.

I have heard Martz’s name floated around as well. Boy would that be something. Now if Martz comes in and revamps the offense it’s quite possible Joey could stay and be a quarterback with that style. Look at Bulger and Warner, they aren’t runners, they just drop back get protection and wing it. Maybe that’s just what Joey needs. I hear you cringing right now!

  3. Superfly Said,

Mooch has to go. He is screwing up some pretty good players. Why not play to your players strengths? Joey is not a West Coast quarterback. He does have a great arm and would flourish in the right system. So many screwy plays are called and so much chaos is going on in the locker room that the head coach must be held responsible. The thing is, who should be brought in. I can’t see Martz doing much with his health condition. How about a coordinator or coach with one of the top teams in the league like Ken Whisenhunt or Russ Grimm of the Steelers. Their offense isn’t flashy but it gets it done when needed. They focus a lot more on the running game and their O-line is solid. Either one would bring a winning attitude as well.

Good points Superfly! I agree with you on Joey. I think the right system is all he needs. I heard Tim Ryan mention on Fox yesterday that he heard or know of 5 general managers who would love to have Joey on their team. That’s why I hate to give up on the guy, I think he does have potential.

Now hold on tight, cause if the Sports Dude sees this he ain’t gonna be happy!
