Weekend Wrapup

Monday, December 13th, 2004

Lions: I love watching the Lions because you can predict what the next play outcome will be every time. Harrington really struggled and that about sums it up. KJ had another great game. The defense couldn’t make stops in the 2nd half when it needed too. Another typical Lions game.

Pistons: Starting to look like the Lions as far as being inconsistent. I am still not worried, because the team hasn’t been together the entire season so far, but their inability to beat the lesser teams isn’t helping their start. They won’t get above .500 until they develop more consistency.

Tigers: Lost out on all the free agents since Percival signed. Maybe he’s bad luck, or maybe guys are using the Tigers as leverage. Either way it sucks. Next in their sites is Edgar Renteria.

Red Wings: Not much going on, but former Wing Brett Hull had a funny appearance on Saturday Night Live.

That’s it for now!

Edwards, NHL, Tigers, Rip, College Hoops

Friday, December 10th, 2004

Lots of great stories from the Free Press involving our favorite Detroit teams. Here’s the latest:

Braylon Edwards receives the Biletnikoff Award as top wide receiver. He definitely deserves it. I thought he should have had more Heisman interest also, but that’s the way it goes. He was instrumental in all of Michigan’s big wins and delivered some of the top catches of the year. He should make a solid pro, he has good hands, size and speed, and it seems like he has matured.

Sides finally talking as NHL/NHLPA finally get together. The NHLPA’s proposal doesn’t have all the right answers, but it’s at least a step in the right direction. I believe this season is lost, but if they can hammer out a successful agreement and start up next year that would be great.

Tigers lost out on Finley, Glaus. I was actually shocked that 3B Troy Glaus didn’t become a Tiger. Sounds like he is a West coast guy and that’s one of the main reasons for signing with Arizona. Finley also is a west coast and National League guy so it’s not really that surprising. Look for the Tigers to continue to go hard after Carl Pavano and also enter the Adrian Beltre hunt.

Rip donates uniforms to local high school. Detroit Central was the beneficiary of some a generous holiday gift from Pistons star Rip Hamilton. He went out and bought shoes, uniforms, warmups, etc. for the basketball team. Way to go Rip!

Injury bug hits UM again as Horton is out 4 weeks. Another starter goes down for the Wolverines as they continue to suffer from injuries. This should strengthen their bench and as some of these guys come back, they will be a stronger team. They should still be able to survive and get to the NCAA Tournament.

Players signing elsewhere

What started off as a good offseason with the quick signing of Troy Percival, has soured with the latest batch of potential Tigers are headed elsewhere. Read the article below for more info.

Tigers’ free agent targets headed elsewhere

Article by Danny Knobler - MLive.com

Detroit — Troy Glaus isn’t going to be a Detroit Tiger, and it looks like Steve Finley won’t be, either.

Carl Pavano? Don’t count on it.

The Tigers had hoped to make a free-agent splash this week by signing both Glaus and Finley, and they also hoped to be in contention for the services of Pavano, baseball’s most-sought free-agent starting pitcher. Instead, baseball sources said Wednesday night, Glaus will be introduced today as the Arizona Diamondbacks’ new third baseman.

What’s more, Finley has told people that he intends to stay on the west coast. With both San Francisco and Anaheim interested, it’s become clear that the center fielder isn’t coming to the Tigers.

My view: Not good news, but their are still lots of great players out there. The Tigers will get some of them (possibility of Lowe, Beltre, ???) and keep heading toward the top of the Central Division.

Pistons bench struggles without Williamson, James

Tuesday, December 7th, 2004

An article about this year’s version of the Pistons, not quite as good as last year’s without “Big Nasty” Corliss Williamson according to this article.

Nasty surprise

Yahoo! Sports article by John Hollinger, SI.com

Welcome to the brave new world of the 2004-05 NBA, where the the Suns and Sonics are unbeatable, the Wizards have the best record in the East, and the Pacers find themselves playing with Jamaal Tinsley and four guys from the Ft. Wayne YMCA.

So given those developments, perhaps it’s no surprise that the defending champion Pistons are just 9-8 after 17 games. Of course, the fight with Indiana has been the main attention-getter in Detroit’s campaign, and the team clearly was hurt by Ben Wallace’s six-game suspension.

However, that shouldn’t mask the champs’ genuine struggles. Flash back, if you will, to how things stood right before the cup of ice hit Ron Artest. The Pistons were getting absolutely smoked in their own building, 97-82, by the Pacers. This was their third double-digit loss in eight games, without a single double-digit win to the team’s credit.

Weekend Wrapup

Monday, December 6th, 2004

Lions: Holding on to the slim hope of a playoff berth. They will definitely have to play better than they did on Sunday. Joey was average at best, but Kevin Jones was the real hero with 196 yards rushing and a touchdown. He said he wanted to get 1000 yards rushing this year and he might have a chance. It was nice to see Mooch not forget about him in the second half.

Pistons: Still hovering around .500 after a tough loss to the Spurs and a blowout win over the Hornets. They are still trying to figure out how to play defense with the new rules.

Tigers: Still in the Pavano hunt. They should have a real solid offseason.

Wolverines Football: Off to the Rose Bowl to play….Texas? Texas jumped over California in the last BCS poll so took the Big 10/Pac 10 matchup away. This will be a touch matchup for the Wolverines, but could end up being one of the best bowl games of the season. That and we get Miami vs. Florida. Awesome.

Wolverines Basketball: A big win over Notre Dame, but the loss of Lester Abrahms for the season is tough.

Spartans Football: A disappointing end to a disappointing season. Some highs (Wisconsin, MIchigan) and some lows (Rutgers, Penn St., Hawaii) made for a long season. Look for Stanton to start next season healthy and take the Spartans to a bowl.

Spartans Basketball: Ouch. A bad loss to GW, but they rebounded with an unimpressive win over George Mason. Not the weekend Coach Izzo I am sure envisioned.

Other Sports: USC vs. Oklahoma for the national title and Auburn will be odd-man out. I wish they would have put Utah against Auburn in a bowl, that would have been fun. Urban Meyer says no to Notre Dame and takes the Florida job. No surprise here, he is a good coach but knows when their is talent and Florida has alot more than the Irish. High school basketball starts this week and we get to have our first boy’s home game in our new gym. Should be very exciting.

Chet Lemon, Big Ben and Hockey…

Nice article on Chet Lemon in new Baseball Digest
Last night I was flipping through my Baseball Digest and found a nice article on former Tigers centerfielder Chet Lemon. It was a very good article that talked about how his career began and his move from the White Sox to the Tigers. If you get a chance check it out.

Big Ben rejoins Pistons

Free Press article by Perry A. Farrell

San Antonio — Big Brother is back.

The Pistons have Ben Wallace in their lineup again, and it sounds like music to them.

While reporters interviewed Wallace after Thursday’s practice at the SBC Center, Chauncey Billups strolled by and sang: “Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.”

During practice, Wallace blocked a Darko Milicic shot and told him to go stronger to the basket the next time.

At another point, the second unit was getting the best of the starters before Wallace hit a shot in the lane.

Faith, hope and charity abound in silly, fun game at Yost Arena

Free Press article by Michael Rosenberg

Ann Arbor — In a grand old barn in Ann Arbor, in front of fans who paid 10 bucks to get in, Steve Yzerman finally played another hockey game.

Thursday night was all about fun and charity. But this winter is all about business and millionaires. And if business swallows this NHL season, it might gulp down the rest of Yzerman’s career.

Farewell, Captain?

“I don’t know,” Yzerman said between periods at Yost Ice Arena. “I can just sit back and wait, but I’d say, in all probability, that I don’t know if I’m looking to play beyond this year.”

Pavano Update

Tigers make pitch to Pavano

MLB.com article by Jason Beck

Detroit — The Tigers, once regarded in the backdrop of the free-agent market, might be first in line in more than just the order of visits for Carl Pavano.

Detroit is believed to have offered a four-year contract to the free-agent starter, who will arrive in the city Thursday night as part of his tour of American League cities over the next week.

Pavano’s agent, Scott Shapiro, neither confirmed nor denied that an offer was made. However, he made both the Tigers’ aggressiveness and Pavano’s patience pretty clear while indicating they’re nowhere close to a deal.

“Detroit has stated [its] definite, significant interest in Carl,” Shapiro said. “I’ve made my point that we’re going to let the market mature. It’s basic market economics. Carl is one of the best pitchers on the market.”

While the market matures, Pavano will get to know the American League. After touring Comerica Park and meeting with Tigers officials on Friday, Pavano and Shapiro will head to New York and meet with the Yankees. From there, they’ll go to Baltimore, then Seattle, and finally to Anaheim just ahead of baseball’s Winter Meetings next weekend.

It’s at that point, Shapiro said, that they’ll start weighing offers.

“Nothing’s going to happen until we gather enough information and let Carl process that information to make a decision,” Shapiro said.

Pavano has already visited the defending world champion Boston Red Sox, the organization that drafted him in 1994. Add in five National League teams, and interest in Pavano comes from a dozen teams.

Pavano will turn 29 next month. He owns a 57-58 career record between Montreal and Florida. Pavano emerged as an All-Star in 2004 by going 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA for the Marlins, who could still have a chance at re-signing him.

My view: Every team he has visited his agent has said the same thing. Carl wants to learn about the team’s facilities, training staff, etc., etc,. Don’t look for him to sign at least for a couple of more weeks. Other reports I have read say that the Tigers and Orioles are in the running just as much as the Yankees and Red Sox.

What I am thinking…

Thursday, December 2nd, 2004

stop the jokes please.

I didn’t really see any super interesting news on the Detroit Sports news front so this is what you get, mindless ramblings of one Leelanau Sports Guy.

I think John Navarre will have a decent showing in his first NFL game. It helps that it’s against the Lions, and not one of the leagues top defenses. I don’t know if he will carry on in the Tom Brady or Todd Collins tradition yet, but he could be decent. He has a big arm, but obviously not much mobility. We will see.

I think Illinois will be very difficult to beat in the Big Ten Men’s hoops race. I watched a little of the first half last night in their blowout win over #1 Wake Forest and all I can say is WOW, they are fast. The Illini backcourt will be the best in the nation and give the rest of the Big Ten fits.

I think that the Pistons will go on a winning streak now that Ben Wallace is back. He’s the heart and soul of this team as well as their most outspoken leader. Of course having Larry Brown back won’t hurt either.

I think Notre Dame made a big mistake in firing Ty Willingham. He was still working on bringing in his types of players and should have been allowed to coach through at least 1 full recruiting class. If he ends up at Washington, the Huskies should count their blessings and send a big thanks to the Irish.

I think that The Incredibles was a great movie! I loved it. Can’t get enough of the Coach.

That’s more than enough thinking out of me at any one time.
