Brawl at The Palace voted No. 3 sports story in AP poll

The brawl that broke out at an Indiana Pacers-Detroit Pistons game was the No. 3 sports story of the year in voting by the newspaper and broadcast members of The Associated Press.
The Nov. 19 fight at The Palace trailed only Boston’s first World Series title since 1918 and the unprecedented comeback against the Yankees (108 first-place votes and 1,325 points) and Lance Armstrong’s sixth straight Tour de France title (seven first-place votes, 785 points).
The brawl earned six first-place votes and 662 points. The Pistons’ NBA Finals upset of the Los Angeles Lakers finished eighth with one first-place vote and 342 points.
The AP sports story of the year was announced Wednesday.
