Lions set NFL record for consecutive road losses

Monday, December 22nd, 2003

Carolina rested five starters, but still managed one of its easiest wins of the year, beating Detroit 20-14 and sending the Lions into NFL infamy with their 24th consecutive road loss. “It eats me alive and makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to think about it,” said Lions guard Ray Brown. “Everybody on the team is part of the streak and it’s nothing to be proud of.” The Lions (4-11) had just eight first downs and 106 yards of total offense. Quarterback Joey Harrington only played until midway through the second quarter before Mike McMahon replaced him, but the two combined to go 7-of-19 for 53 yards. “There’s a lot of searching for answers, a lot of things to fix and some things to build on,” said first-year coach Steve Mariucci. “These guys care a lot and are determined to break that streak.”

Lions to put Charles Rogers on injured reserve

Sunday, December 21st, 2003

Wide Receiver Charles Rogers, who broke his collarbone in practice on Oct. 7, will go on injured reserve this week, ending his year. “It’s disappointing, but I knew it was going to be tough to get back,” he said. “It’s taking longer to heal than we expected, and even when it does, I haven’t been able to keep the strength and muscle mass that I need to play in this league.” In five games before the injury, Rogers caught 22 passes for 243 yards. Even after sitting out nearly two months, he still leads the team in touchdowns with three. Rogers will be the 11th Lions player to go on injured reserve this season, one of the highest totals in the league.

AP: Grand Valley State captures 2nd consecutive Division II Football Championship

Monday, December 15th, 2003

Senior linebacker Mike Hoad intercepted a fourth-down pass with 27 seconds left to seal the GVSU Lakers’ second straight title with a 10-3 victory over North Dakota. Grand Valley State (14-1) dominated most of the game. But led by John Bowenkamp’s passing, North Dakota cut it to 10-3 in the final period and fell just short in the final minute. Quarterback Cullen Finnerty was 19-of-29 overall for 149 yards and was the game’s leading rusher with 86 yards on 19 carries. The game was the second lowest scoring contest in the history of the championship.

Tigers sign outfielder White

Monday, December 15th, 2003

According to several reports, the Tigers agreed to terms with free agent outfielder Rondell White on a two-year, $6 million contract early Sunday morning. The Tigers focused on White after veteran outfielder Reggie Sanders reportedly turned down a similar offer. After beginning spring training with the New York Yankees in 2003, the 31-year-old White was traded to San Diego before the start of the season. He batted .278 with 18 home runs and 66 RBI in 115 games with the Padres and earned the first All-Star appearance of his 11-year career.

Ex-Lions coach Ross hired at Army

Tuesday, December 9th, 2003

Bobby Ross was hired as Army’s coach Tuesday, returning to football after resigning as the Detroit Lions’ coach three years ago. He takes over a team that became the first in NCAA history to finish 0-13 after losing to Navy 34-6 on Saturday. “Bobby Ross is highly qualified. His reputation as a coach speaks for itself,” Army superintendent William Lennox Jr. said. “We are very confident that he has what it takes to restore a winning tradition to Army football.” Ross, who turns 67 this month, hasn’t coached since 2000, when he quit the Lions after nine games. He led the San Diego Chargers to their only Super Bowl appearance in 1995, a 49-26 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. His NFL record was 77-68. Ross was hired after former Nebraska coach Frank Solich turned down the job.
