Record Eagle: Eagles slow down, win

Article from the Record Eagle.

Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s held the ball the entire third quarter - in which neither team scored - and eventually hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to beat Leland 22-19 in the Cherryland Conference girls basketball opener.

Leland led 14-13 when St. Mary’s took that ball to start the third quarter. Comets coach Larry Glass said the Eagles “chose to hold the ball and we chose not to come out on them,” so eight minutes ticked off the clock without either team scoring.”

St. Mary’s eventually tied the game 19-19 and played for the last shot - a three-pointer by Syrena Rexroat that fell through the net at the buzzer.

Rexroat had a game-high 10 points for the Eagles. Alisha Glass scored eight for Leland (4-3).
